Canopy & Cloud Watch

Old Oak at the Park Boundary

Found a massive white oak tucked behind the community garden near 4th Avenue. The trunk easily measures three adult arm spans around. Its lower bark has deep vertical ridges filled with pale sea-foam lichen. Spent five quiet minutes listening to a pair of blue jays darting through the high canopy, dropping acorns onto the leaves below. Stepping away from screens for even twenty minutes brought a visible sense of mental clarity.

Rain Patterns on Stone Steps

Stepped outside right after the afternoon squall cleared. The smell of wet cedar and cool asphalt was striking. Counted three earthworms carefully navigating the mossy gap between two granite flagstones on the library terrace. The clouds were already breaking open into ragged strips of pale blue. A neighbor walking a golden retriever nodded as we both took in the fresh air.

Dusk Birds along the Ridge Line

Walked the western perimeter path as the sun dipped just beneath the pine ridge. The backlight turned the grasses a rich amber gold. Identified a mourning dove calling from a telephone pole and two American robins foraging through damp mulch. It is remarkable how quickly the temperature drops the moment the direct sun vanishes behind the hills.

Morning Dew on Wild Grasses

Cold air this morning. Spider webs stretched between the wooden fence posts were glistening with bead-like water droplets. It was wonderfully quiet before city commute traffic started. Took a moment to deliberately feel the damp chill on my palms and inhale deeply. This simple daily ritual is quickly becoming my favorite part of the day.
